Government Subsidized Internet via Satellite
|
In 2009 U.S. lawmakers passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to stem the tide of the economic crash of 2008
and 2009. This economic stimulus plan injected over $780 billion of government money into the economy through a variety
of channels. Of this huge amount of money, more than $7 billion was given to the Rural Utilities Service government agency to
help rural america through a variety of channels. One of the goals of this particular set of money was to use government
subsidies to increase broadband internet access among rural American citizens and hence spur greater economic activity in this area.
Government high speed internet had long been an
idea of many, but never before had there been such a legislative push to see it become a reality.
Out of
this legislation came the Recovery Act Internet Program
from HughesNet.

Government Subsidized Satellite Internet
Because HughesNet is the biggest and premiere provider of
satellite internet service
in the United States,
the Rural Utilities Service chose to partner with HughesNet to distribute to rural Americans over $50 million of
the $7 billion it was given. HughesNet was one of the only
satellite internet providers
to receive such government funds.
These funds were originally distributed in late 2010 and so have only recently come available to the general public
living in rural areas. That is the good news. The bad news is that once these government subsidized internet funds
have been depleted, there will be no more - meaning Congress has made no future allocations available
(aka, this is a one-time government broadband stimulus plan). These funds have now been deplenished.
Government Rebate on Satellite Internet
According to the guidelines of the government subsidized satellte internet plan that HughesNet makes
available, a citizen's eligibility for the plan is determined by their household's street address (and
further determined by 2010 census tract information derived from the street address). Only a HughesNet
representative could have told you if your address qualified for
government satellite internet
rebates and
discounts. And please remember that these funds are no longer available!
